# Museum Catalog Note

This 1879 Beadle and Adams dime novel, Canada Chet; or, Old Anaconda in Sitting Bull's Camp, is authored by Edward L. Wheeler, known for his "Deadwood Dick" and "Rosebud Rob" series.

The tale follows two young Canadian adventurers—eighteen-year-old Hal Dayton and the tall, skeletal Dave Laam ("Big Track")—as they boat through a remote northwestern forest near Sitting Bull's territories. Encountering a white woman named Hazel Eye who warns them of dangers from Sitting Bull's warriors and a Canadian trapper called "Canada Chet," they face an attack from painted warriors led by Chief Mink Cap. Hazel Eye returns to intervene, invoking fear of a "Woods Demon" to halt the assault and allow the youths to escape downriver. The narrative blends frontier adventure with scenes of survival, Native American conflict, and mysterious female intervention in the wilderness setting.
