This issue of a weekly serial magazine contains Chapter I and the beginning of Chapter II of "The Dead Detective's Double" by Gerald Carlton. Detective Gyles Garnett, pursuing counterfeiters in Western New York, discovers the murdered body of fellow Pinkerton agent Joe Fales on a storm-ravaged bridge, secured by rope with a warning note attached to a bowie-knife threatening death to anyone who shadows the criminal band. After concealing Fales's body, Garnett infiltrates the nearby tavern "The Magpie" under the assumed identity of "Harry Bluff," posing as an associate of the criminals. While gathering intelligence among the suspected counterfeiters, a man bearing Fales's exact likeness mysteriously appears in the tavern doorway, startling everyone present, then vanishes. Garnett explains he witnessed a corpse resembling the apparition on the bridge, deflecting suspicion. The gang searches the building unsuccessfully for their uninvited visitor.
