Beadle's Half Dime Library, No. 508

· April 19, 1887

This issue contains the opening installment of "Fatal Footsteps" by Edward L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick series. The story follows Deadwood Dick, Jr., who returns to Whiskyville, a mining camp built atop the ruins of his former diggings destroyed six months prior. Armed with legal documents proving his ownership rights to the land, Dick arrives demanding the residents vacate. He encounters Mayor Graham Goff and Sheriff Levi Loggerhead discussing robberies attributed to a mysterious bandit called "Red Rupert." When Dick reveals his identity and threatens violent vengeance if ignored, the sheriff attempts to arrest him for past murders and threatening behavior. Dick draws revolvers, halting the arrest. The narrative combines Western frontier adventure with detective elements, establishing a conflict between legal claims and established occupation of valuable mining territory.
