# Catalog Note

This installment of Beadle's Half-Dime Library contains "Burt Bunker, The Trapper," a frontier adventure tale by George E. Lasalle set in 1843 in the northwestern wilderness. The narrative follows weathered trapper Burt Bunker as he encounters Pomp Augustus Brown, a enslaved man carrying a lantern attached to his head, searching for his mistress Olive Mulford and mother Polly Brown who have been abducted by Native American horsemen while riding in a grove. Burt's cabin has burned. Burt agrees to guide Pomp toward the Beaver River Agency to inform Colonel Mulford, Olive's father and Indian agent, of the kidnapping, while also proceeding to his own trapping grounds at the Yellowstone. The narrative emphasizes Burt's three decades of frontier experience, his superstitious nature, and his rifle "Betsey Jane." The story combines frontier survival elements with a rescue plot.
