# "The Crooked Trail" by Col. Arthur F. Holt and "Little Lightfoot, the Pilot of the Woods"

This issue contains two frontier adventure serials. "The Crooked Trail," by Col. Arthur F. Holt (author of "Black Buckskin" and "Kenneth, the Knife King"), follows a small wagon train of three prairie-schooners crossing Iowa territory bound for Eagle Bluffs. The party includes Philip Lester (leader), his daughter Louise, and young artist Guy Garland. When their guide Sam Cole disappears into a prairie chasm, a mysterious plainsman calling himself Iowa Jack arrives and offers to guide them—but Garland notices Jack wearing Sam Cole's ring, suggesting foul play.

"Little Lightfoot, the Pilot of the Woods" depicts a young buckskin-clad trapper barely eighteen, armed with rifles and knives, who discovers a Sioux warrior's reflection in a spring while drinking. The ranger kills the attacker by throwing a knife into the warrior's chest.
