Castleton refuses the advice. Chapter II shifts to Bullion City itself, a rough mining camp of two hundred inhabitants plagued by gambling dens, thieves, and Lightning Dick's robberies. The narrative follows patrons at the "Gambler's Paradise" saloon where gambling is rampant. A tall, bearded stranger in incongruous formal wear—described as a curious character—enters and addresses the monte-dealer.
