The story then shifts to Branch's backstory: he is the grandson of an English nobleman who secretly fled England with his beloved and wealth after his father's arranged exile, settling upriver from New Orleans at an estate called "The Retreat." Branch's dying father reveals this genealogical secret and a binding familial vow to his son, now passed to Branch himself—a supernatural restraint influencing his melancholy disposition.
