This 1881 Beadle and Adams weekly serializes "Tiger Tom, the Texan Terror: A Romance of the Southern Pampas" by Oll Coomes. The narrative follows a prairie merchant's wagon train traveling across Western Texas with his daughter Jacquetta, her companion Irene, and a servant. Jacquetta is an accomplished horsewoman and markswoman. Years earlier, Walden dismissed his young scout Tom Brayton after noticing romantic attachment to his daughter; Brayton subsequently became the notorious outlaw "Tiger Tom." An intercepted carrier pigeon message warns of an attack on the train at Red Fork of Colorado. When Jacquetta and Irene ride ahead to the river, Jacquetta becomes trapped in quicksand. A Comanche warrior emerges to attack her, but a white ranger—later revealed as Tiger Tom himself—appears to intervene, engaging the savage in combat.
