This issue features "Dandy Rock's Pledge; or, Hunted to Death" by George Waldo Browne, a frontier adventure serial. Rock Randel, a Texan gunslinger, promises a dying man named Spranger to rescue his child and avenge wrongs committed against him. When a gang led by a masked man arrives to claim the body of Roland Maxcy, Rock refuses to let them bury the apparently lifeless man. After a struggle, Rock is captured and bound. A cinnamon bear attacks during the burial, allowing Rock to free himself and escape into the Sierra Nevada wilderness. Pursued by eleven armed men across increasingly broken terrain, Rock flees through darkness toward a treacherous ravine, seeking concealment while running for his life. The serial combines gunfight action, frontier dialect, and survival elements across multiple chapters.
