This June 1905 issue features "Laramie Joe's Pores Paros" by Oll Coomes, author of other frontier tales. The western serial opens with Judge Benoni Randall's mysterious murder in the mining camp of Last Lick, Colorado—he is found fatally wounded by a barbed arrow, initially blamed on Indians but revealed as a white man's deed. His orphaned daughter Zulima inherits the mining claim and befriends Sybil Bell, whose father Major Bell becomes a stabilizing presence. Months later, Reverend Paul Postle arrives to establish religious meetings, alarming the camp's gamblers and roughnecks. Three bullies—Grizzly Dave, Cale Bunce, and Sonora Steve—confront the eccentric, thin preacher at the local hotel, attempting to force him to drink whiskey. Postle refuses, declaring he doesn't drink, his firm manner surprising the roughs.
