This issue of Beadle and Adams (No. 1056, October 19, 1897) features "Cowboy Chris in Cinnabar; Or, The Battle for the Blue Jeans" by Wm. West Wilder (Wyoming Will). The Western serial begins with three masked road agents halting a stage in Cross-cut Canyon to abduct Mrs. George Newman and her daughter Grace. Two cowboys—handsome Christopher Comstock ("Cowboy Chris") and his weathered companion Reuben Randall ("Round-up Rube")—arrive and chase off the bandits. Chris's horse is fatally wounded; Rube mercifully shoots it. Grace Newman thanks both men, and Chris rides into Cinnabar City with the Newman women. Mrs. Newman reveals her late husband was principal owner of the Blue Jeans Mine there, setting up the plot's central conflict.
