The narrative follows a mysterious easterner calling himself William Fredericks who arrives in Danger Divide, a rough Colorado mining camp. After a confrontation with local bully Jack Dashaway over a cigar—resolved when Fredericks shoots the ash from the bully's mouth with perfect aim—Fredericks befriends Dashaway. Through their conversation, Fredericks learns of a young, skilled toughened miner in the camp, and Dashaway reveals his own tragic past through a gold watch inscribed with a death tally. Inside the watch are a portrait miniature of a beautiful young woman and a lock of golden hair. Dashaway confesses he is avenging the woman's wrongs through his violent actions, establishing a compact with the stranger based on mutual respect and honor.
