"Deadwood Dick's Dozen; Or, The Fakir of Phantom Flats" by Edward L. Wheeler, published 1883 by Beadle and Adams. A Western adventure serial featuring the famous vigilante character. Agnes Blye and her elderly companion Miss Spilkins, traveling by stagecoach to the mining camp Phantom Flats, are captured by the brigand Black Bob's gang for ransom. Agnes is imprisoned in a mountain cave hideout while Miss Spilkins is handed to an Indian outlaw. The masked bandit threatens to force Agnes into marriage, but Deadwood Dick suddenly arrives at the hideout, having tracked Black Bob for murdering the Laverill family at Yuba Creek. A gunfight ensues; Dick shoots Black Bob fatally. Dick then escorts Agnes away, planning to locate her father and safely reunite them while avoiding potential trouble his notorious reputation might cause in the new town.
