· 1861

This issue of Beadle's dime novel contains two serials. "The Emerald Necklace; or, Mrs. Butterby's Boarder" by Rose Kennedy concerns Paul Pennon, a young artist living in a New York boarding house operated by Mrs. Butterby. Dissatisfied with city summer heat, Pennon embarks on a rambling sketching expedition into the countryside. In a picturesque valley, he encounters a young woman named Clematis drawing water from a well; she discovers a costly emerald necklace in the well's depths. Upon learning of the discovery, Clematis's mother warns that ill fortune attends whoever finds the necklace. The second serial, "The Frontier Angel: A Romance of Kentucky Ranger's Life" by Edward S. Ellis, deals with frontier adventures set in Northern Kentucky, Southern Ohio, and Indiana, featuring historical characters and emphasizing "woman's sufferings and devotion."
