Authentic Science Fiction, July 1957, Issue 82

This issue opens with editor E. C. Tubb's editorial debating definitions of science fiction, proposing that admissible stories should not contain demonstrably scientifically inaccurate premises, while allowing speculative technologies like faster-than-light drives and invented scientific mechanisms.

The featured novellette is Brian W. Aldiss's "What Triumphs?" in which the Shouter, a spoolseller traveling the galaxy's rim, accidentally leaves his ship beyond the galaxy and discovers an oxygen-bearing planet orbiting an impossible intergalactic white dwarf. He dies upon landing, poisoned by the atmosphere. A mysterious humanoid being emerges from the planet's lake, studies Shouter's ship and its contents for twenty-five days, deduces a terrifying fact about galactic civilization, then pilots the ship toward the galaxy to confront a rebel leader named One-Eye on the war-torn planet Owler.

The issue also advertises novelettes "No Greater Love" by Nicholas Canadine and "It's Such a Beautiful Day" by Isaac Asimov, plus short stories by Nigel Lloyd, Robert Silverberg, Robert Presslie, and Bertram Chandler.
