Pulp Fiction

Astounding Science Fiction, British Edition

· February 1945

A streamlined red spacecraft pierces through a forest of alien vegetation, its trajectory marked by violent bursts of light. Above, a smaller craft maneuvers through the yellow-green canopy. The cover announces "Blind Man's Buff" by Malcolm Jameson, a story of extraterrestrial encounter and sensory limitation transformed into tactical advantage.

Astounding Science Fiction dominated pulp markets from the 1930s onward, selling serialized adventure to working readers at newsstand prices. These wood-pulp magazines—printed on cheap paper with painted covers—established the visual and narrative conventions that comic books would adopt wholesale: the alien landscape, the technological spectacle, the human figure subordinated to cosmic scale. Astounding's British edition circulated during wartime, bringing American pulp sensibilities across the Atlantic.
