# The Argosy, Volume XVII (January-June 1874)

This issue of The Argosy, edited by Mrs. Henry Wood, contains serialized novels, short stories, poetry, and illustrated features. The lead serial is "In the Dead of Night," beginning with a dramatic opening: Lionel Bering navigates a cliff path during a violent storm near Melcham and witnesses a stranger stumbling toward a dangerous chasm. Despite warnings, the man falls into the abyss. Bering attempts a perilous descent via "The Smugglers' Staircase" to rescue him but is stopped by his fellow Bunce, insisting the victim is dead.

Other notable content includes works by the author of East Lynne—"Adam Grainger," "All Souls' Eve," "The Diamond Bracelet," "A Dream from Heaven," and "Five Thousand a Year"; Christina Rossetti's poem "A Dirge"; essays and stories by Johnny Ludlow; and illustrated features including "A Night in a Monastery" and "Drive to the Land's End."
