Argosy All-Story Weekly — 'The Metal Monster'

· August 7, 1920

A colossal blue-grey mechanical giant fills the right half of the cover, its angular, faceted head turned in profile above snow-capped peaks; below, a small human figure — a woman with wind-swept hair — cowers at its feet, dwarfed to insignificance. The crimson masthead announces Argosy All-Story Weekly in bold slab-serif capitals, while the cover-lines pitch A. Merritt's serial as 'Another Amazing Story by the Author of "The Moon Pool"' — invoking a prior hit to sell the new one. This is pulp mechanics at full throttle: painted menace, celebrity authorship, and breathless copy fused into a single newsstand shout. Argosy, founded 1882, pioneered the wood-pulp format that incubated science fiction, weird fiction, and adventure — the direct genetic ancestors of the comic book.
