Argosy All-Story Weekly

· December 2, 1922

A man in evening dress—white tie, cummerbund, tuxedo jacket—leans forward in controlled alarm, caught between a curtained doorway where a woman's face peers out and a window through which a shadowy figure watches from outside. The cover-line announces Kain by Max Brand, subtitled The Story of a Wrecked Revenge, signaling the domestic thriller lodged inside adventure pulp. The artist signature reads Modest Stein. Argosy All-Story Weekly was the dominant wood-pulp fiction magazine of its era, selling fiction by the pound at ten cents a copy to a mass readership hungry for genre variety—westerns, crime, romance, adventure—under one masthead. Its painted covers traded in immediate narrative tension, and the genre formulas refined here passed almost directly into the comic book when paper costs and Depression economics reshaped popular publishing in the 1930s.
