The First Men in the Moon by H.G. Wells

· 1926–1927

This issue of Amazing Stories features the serialized science fiction novel The First Men in the Moon by H. G. Wells. The narrative follows Bedford, a financially ruined writer who retreats to isolated Lympne in Kent to compose a play. There he encounters scientist Mr. Cavor, who has developed "Cavorite," a material opaque to gravitation. Bedford becomes Cavor's business manager, and together they construct a spherical spacecraft. They launch toward the moon, arriving before lunar dawn. Upon exploration, they discover rapidly growing vegetation and eventually encounter the Selenites—intelligent lunar inhabitants who capture them. After escape and conflict with "Moon Butchers" (hostile Selenites), Bedford reaches the sphere's upper regions. The conclusion depicts Bedford alone on the moon's surface, searching for his companion while navigating the harsh environment of extreme heat and thin atmosphere.
