This issue features "Seven Suspected," a complete novelette by Eleanor Gates and Frederick Moore set on the fictional South Pacific island of Raragona. A murder whisper spreads through the crescent-shaped island when news arrives that a government cutter will arrive in five days to arrest the killer. Among the nine white inhabitants—two beyond suspicion (the French planter's frail wife and Padre Araneta)—seven men become suspects: Snubby the store-keeper, Liverpool a cockney laborer, aged Charlie Miller, plantation lessee French, and three mountain dwellers (Heathcote, Brewer, Welcome). The story establishes elaborate physical descriptions of each suspect while depicting the island's transformation from peaceful calm to tense anticipation of the cutter's arrival through the coastal lagoon gap.
