# Celebrated Classics of Fantasy Magazine: The Abyss, July 1950

This quarterly fantasy magazine reprints classic adventure and fantastic fiction. The issue features A. Merritt's novel-length serial "The Face in the Abyss," in which explorer Nicholas Graydon seeks an ancient mystery and untold riches in Peru's Cordillera de Carabaya—a land described as bewitched and treacherous. The complete story appears to occupy substantial space within the issue.

The second major offering is Eric North's "The Green Flame," a crime-fantasy tale centered on the criminal mastermind Toad, whose mysterious secret grants him extraordinary crushing power—described as more terrible than hatred itself.

The issue includes a readers' column with fan letters discussing earlier reprinted stories, editorial correspondence about magazine selection, and advertisements for insurance plans, television training, accounting courses, and work clothing. Illustrations for the Merritt piece are credited to Virgil Finlay; Paul Calle illustrates "The Green Flame."
