The photographers initially demanded $25,000 for the negatives (later reduced to $100), arousing suspicion among evaluators. Military and civilian analysts, including Life magazine photo experts, concluded the images were hoaxed, noting shadow inconsistencies—the alleged object's dome cast shadows opposite to those of foreground terrain, indicating impossible dual light sources.
