The Mysteries of the Court of London
Reynolds, George W. M. (George William MacArthur), 1814-1879, author · circa 1900
This volume from George W. M. Reynolds's The Fortunes of the Ashtons (Volume IV of the London edition) is a serialized gothic narrative blending mystery, melodrama, and domestic intrigue. Set in southern France, the story centers on Monsieur Volney, an emotionally distant, mysterious man of about sixty, and his daughter Clarine, twenty-two, who inhabit a supposedly haunted chateau. Volney, marked by deep sorrow and living in virtual seclusion with minimal staff, spends his time in isolated study and solitary walks. Though Clarine has lived in this remote isolation for five years without female companionship, her father remains unmovingly reserved. The narrative promises revelations linking this chateau and the reclusive Volneys to the affairs of the main characters—Lord Octavian Meredith and his wife Zoe. Referenced episodes include encounters with mysterious figures known as "the Burker," an Ayah (nursemaid), and various dramatic incidents involving mummies, Alpine tragedies, and financial intrigue.
