"The Fortunes of the Ashtons," by G.W.M. Reynolds, Volume XVI

This volume comprises the complete serial narrative "The Fortunes of the Ashtons," a domestic melodrama set in 1824 Oxford and London society. The narrative follows two brothers of the noble Vivian family: Hugh, sensuous and dissipated, and the more refined Bertram, pale with intellectual promise. At Oxford, Hugh pursues gaming, racing, and vice while Bertram attempts study but succumbs to peer pressure and accumulating debts. The plot pivots when Bertram meets Eliza Lacey, the beautiful, virtuous eighteen-year-old daughter of a half-pay captain living near the university. Innocent and artless, Eliza contrasts sharply with Hugh's dissolute circle. The narrative develops through encounters involving the Duke and Duchess of Marchmont, complications with London lodging-houses, mysterious crimes, aristocratic intrigue at Covent Garden, and entanglements with titled figures including an Earl and Countess of Lascelles. Themes include seduction, moral corruption, class distinction, and the collision between innocence and worldly vice. Five illustrations by Merrill accompany the text.
