The Mysteries of the Court of London

Reynolds, George W. M. (George William MacArthur), 1814-1879, author · c. 1900

# "The Mysteries of the Court of London," Volume X

This melodramatic serial features multiple interconnected plots populated by aristocratic characters and criminal elements. Chapter I opens with Lady Ernestina Dysart fleeing danger with assistance from the Hangman (Daniel Coffin), a recurring character involved in previous schemes concerning Ariadne Varian and rescue plots. The Hangman, romantically obsessed with the aristocratic Lady Ernestina, warns her of pending execution and aids her escape through a mansion's secret apartments and mechanical chair chamber. However, Ernestina betrays him, trapping Coffin in a mechanical chair as punishment for having assaulted her that evening. She leaves him imprisoned in soundproof rooms, condemning him to slow death by starvation. Subsequent chapters indicate plots involving the guillotine, abduction, Lake Leman, and a character named Clara. The narrative emphasizes gothic atmosphere, architectural secrets, violent passion, and intricate plotting among titled characters alongside criminal underworld figures.
