The Story Paper: A Weekly Budget of Good Things, New and Old

· November 4, 1876

This penny weekly presents "Wed, Yet No Wife; Or, A Leaf in the Dark," its serialized melodrama illustrated with a wood engraving of two figures in tense confrontation—a woman in elegant dress and a man in top hat and overcoat, observed by witnesses in the background. Such story papers, priced at one penny, delivered serialized sensation fiction to working-class Victorian readers hungry for gothic plots of crime, betrayal, and romantic intrigue. These cheaply produced weeklies, filled with sensational narratives and woodcut illustrations, directly preceded the comic book as mass entertainment. They shaped popular taste for episodic storytelling, emotional extremity, and visual narrative—establishing conventions that comics would later inherit and transform.
