Penny Dreadfuls

The Flag of Our Union

· December 16, 1854

This weekly serialized story paper cost a penny and reached working-class readers hungry for sensation and melodrama. The ornate masthead frames Nell Noell, the Light-Keeper's Treasure, a gothic tale of danger and moral peril. Published in Boston for a mass audience, such papers offered serialized fiction—crime, supernatural horror, and domestic tragedy—in dense columns of small type. They were forerunners of modern comics: cheap, disposable, illustrated with woodcuts, and designed for immediate consumption. Though critics dismissed them as corrupting trash, penny dreadfuls and bloods satisfied an enormous appetite for entertainment among those excluded from costly literature and theater.
