Penny Dreadfuls

The Flag of Our Union

· November 25, 1854

This penny weekly serialized melodramatic fiction for working-class readers hungry for sensation and moral instruction. The cover announces Chapter VIII of "Alice, the Fisher Girl: or, The Old Man of the Wreck," a gothic tale of coastal mystery and social peril illustrated with a dramatic woodcut. Such cheap serials—combining crime, horror, domestic tragedy, and supernatural elements—were the Victorian equivalent of today's genre comics, published in installments to guarantee repeat readership. Aimed at clerks, servants, and factory workers, these stories offered escapism and moral lessons while their serialization format and visual storytelling anticipated modern sequential narrative. The illustrated penny dread was the direct ancestor of the adventure and superhero comics that emerged a century later.
