The Flag of Our Union

· September 30, 1854

This Boston weekly serialized The Prince Corsair; or, The Three Brothers of Guzzan, illustrated with a dramatic woodcut of a turbaned figure in exotic dress. Such penny bloods—cheap, sensational serials aimed at working-class readers—thrived on melodrama, crime, and orientalist fantasy. Published weekly at modest cost, they offered urban laborers affordable escape into tales of pirates, murders, and moral extremes. Dismissed by respectable society as vulgar trash, these serials shaped popular taste and narrative hunger. Their direct descendants—comic books and pulp magazines—would inherit both the serialized format and appetite for action, peril, and serialized thrills that defined Victorian cheap print culture.
