Penny Dreadfuls

Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner

· July 22, 1865

This wood-engraved cover depicts a violent confrontation in a modest interior: three men in Victorian dress, one fallen or crouching, another gesturing dramatically, a third advancing with raised arm. The ornamental title treatment announces a story titled "The Old Iron Safe." Such sensational narratives—featuring crime, betrayal, and physical conflict—filled penny dreadfuls and penny bloods, the serialized fiction that cost one or two pence and reached working-class readers throughout Britain and America. These publications offered melodramatic tales of robbery, murder, and social transgression, illustrated with crude but arresting engravings. Aimed at servants, laborers, and shop assistants, they were dismissed by middle-class critics as vulgar and corrupting. Yet they established the visual-narrative formula that would evolve into modern comics: serialized episodes, dramatic illustration, and popular stories told in chapters, each designed to compel readers to purchase the next installment.
