# That Girl of Johnson's
This issue of the Select Series contains the serialized romantic drama "That Girl of Johnson's" by Jean Kate Ludlum, spanning chapters I through XXXVI. The narrative follows Dolores Johnson, an unwanted daughter born into poverty to a shiftless blacksmith father and a sickly mother who dies in infancy. Raised by Betsy Glenn and largely neglected, the quiet, introspective Dolores becomes an excellent housekeeper, spending her evenings alone with her thoughts while her father frequents the tavern. At twenty, her circumstances shift when young Green, educated son of a town judge, visits her father's blacksmith shop and encounters Dolores at the well. Green is immediately struck by her dignified bearing and the unusual light in her face. The narrative proceeds through complications involving a mysterious stranger, a lost mare, village gossip, searches, illness, a nurse's revelatory story, and ultimately questions of identity, destiny, and social position. The story explores themes of isolation, quiet dignity amid hardship, and romantic possibility across class boundaries.
