# A Struggle for a Ring
This 1883 novel by Bertha M. Clay, serialized in the New York Weekly, traces the misadventures following Lord Vivian Carsdale's impulsive marriage to Alice Derwent, daughter of a dancing master. Sent to study with the morally austere Doctor Wallis—himself estranged from his sister for marrying a dancer—Vivian encounters Alice, his tutor's niece, whom the doctor has reluctantly taken in after years of refusing her family aid. Their secret marriage, contracted without family approval, sets in motion decades of emotional turmoil. The narrative develops through sixty-eight chapters depicting Vivian's divided loyalties, Alice's struggle for acceptance in aristocratic society, the emergence of romantic rivals including the titled Lady Ethel, accusations of infidelity, separations, and her ultimate banishment. Themes center on class prejudice, marital conflict, feminine virtue under pressure, and redemption. The novel concludes with reconciliation as suppressed truth emerges and social barriers finally yield.
