Pickwick Abroad; or, The Tour in France
Reynolds, George W. M. (George William MacArthur), 1814-1879 · 1800s
# Contents Note
This bound collection comprises Pickwick Abroad; or, The Tour in France, a twenty-part serial by George W. M. Reynolds, illustrated with forty-one steel engravings by Alfred Crowquill and John Phillips, and thirty-three woodcuts by Bonner. Reynolds's sequel adapts Dickens's characters—Mr. Pickwick, Sam Weller, Snodgrass, Tupman, and Winkle—on a continental tour through France. The narrative contains various episodic tales and legends, some entirely original, others drawing on documented facts. The chapters establish the Pickwickians' arrival at Calais, their travels through France via diligence, and encounters with eccentric characters in Paris including Adolphus Crashem and various French acquaintances. Interspersed adventures span theatrical mishaps, diplomatic misunderstandings, social gatherings at tables-d'hôte, romantic entanglements at the Palais Royal, and embedded narratives such as the Gendarme's tale. The work functions partly as a travel guide to Parisian landmarks and institutions.
