Trim in Kansas City; or, The Detective's Experiment in Second Sight
This issue features the beginning of a detective serial by the author of "Nick Carter." The protagonist Trim, a young detective, receives a murder case summons via telegram from J.V. Dent in Kansas City while billiarding in Chicago. Despite initial hesitation, Trim accepts, theorizing the murder occurred that morning. He departs by train with his friend Charles Gordon, who requests to accompany him. En route, Trim receives a second telegram directing him to the Midland Hotel. Notably, when a porter announces Trim's name in the railway car, Trim has Gordon receive the telegram instead—a precautionary measure against potential adversaries recognizing him. Trim explains his philosophy of assuming criminals monitor his movements and taking seemingly unnecessary precautions. The narrative emphasizes detective tradecraft and cautious procedure.
