This issue of the New Nick Carter Weekly (June 12, 1897, No. 24) contains "Trim's Run of Luck: Or, A Case Concluded Ahead of Time," by the author of Nick Carter. The story opens with a letter from detective Nicholas Carter to his assistant Trim in New Orleans, discussing the case of a stolen emerald called the "Green Eye." Carter grants Trim one week to pursue the criminal Paul Campo, rumored connected to the secret society of Nanigos.
The narrative follows Trim's arrival at a social gathering at Mr. Grey's stylish St. Charles Avenue home, where a voodoo fortune-teller has been engaged for entertainment. The voodoo, a tall Black man accompanied by a woman translator in exotic dress, examines guests' hands and reads their pasts and futures. Though the guests express belief in his supernatural powers, Trim skeptically suspects the performance is a clever trick. Miss De Leon, from the family whose emerald Trim recently recovered, shows intense anxiety about her future reading.
