# Trim in the Wilds
This serial adventure by the author of Nick Carter follows the young detective Trim to South Africa, where he pursues the criminal Jemmy Miller—a steeple-climber implicated in diamond thefts at Kimberley. The chief of police recounts a more pressing mystery: a decade-old string of murders committed by strangulation using a bowstring. Seven or eight victims were killed by a white ex-convict and ex-soldier named Mulvey, who vanished after detection. Investigation suggests Mulvey joined the Narugas, a native tribe in Gordonia, Bechuanaland, several hundred miles away. Two expeditions dispatched by authorities failed to capture him despite scouring mountainous terrain. The natives, skilled at evasion and retreat, referred to their chief as "Malva"—presumably Mulvey's adopted name. A messenger later delivered a note written in deliberately poor English, suggesting the murderer remains in communication with Kimberley authorities.
