# Nick Carter Weekly, No. 9 (February 27, 1897)
This issue features "Trim in Cape Town: Or, The Man With a Strange Line," by the author of "Nick Carter," a serial adventure narrative. The story follows Trim, a young American detective who has been investigating crimes in Alaska and Australia. Aboard the royal mail steamship Malta en route from Melbourne to Southampton, Trim plans to stop in Cape Town before returning to New York to consult with his father and the famous detective Nick Carter about pursuing detective work professionally.
Upon arrival in Cape Town, suspicious activity erupts when a small boat carrying dark-skinned men circles the steamer while crew members—Malays aboard ship—make gestures toward them. Trim observes what appears to be a coordinated signal. When one Malay crew member draws a knife and attacks the old sailor Dobbin, Trim intervenes in hand-to-hand combat. The assailant seizes Trim's throat while attempting to wield the blade, creating a desperate struggle that draws the attention of the ship's company.
