# Mysteries of the Court of London
This serial installment, titled "The Brothers," introduces two contrasting aristocratic siblings at Oxford University in 1824. Hugh Vivian, twenty-one, is dissolute and pleasure-seeking, engaging in hunting, racing, gambling, and vice. His younger brother Bertram, eighteen, is naturally studious but corrupted by Hugh's influence, and both accumulate substantial debts they fear disclosing to their widowed father.
The narrative shifts to their encounter with Eliza Lacey, eighteen, daughter of a retired half-pay captain living in modest circumstances near Oxford. Described as exceptionally beautiful and virtuous, with an innocent, trusting disposition, Eliza is protected by her father from college society. Bertram defends her from an insulting drunk undergraduate, gains an introduction to Captain Lacey, and begins calling regularly. He becomes enamored of Eliza, whose gentleness and intelligence impress both father and suitor. The installment establishes the foundation for romantic complications amid the brothers' financial troubles.
