The Mysteries of the Court of London
Reynolds, George W. M. (George William MacArthur), 1814-1879 · c. 1860
# Catalog Note: The Fortunes of the Ashtons, Volume XVI
This serial novel by G.W.M. Reynolds follows two aristocratic brothers at Oxford University in 1824. Hugh Vivian, the elder, pursues dissipation through hunting, racing, and dissolute pleasures, while younger brother Bertram initially studies but is drawn into similar vices by false shame and deference to his senior. Both accumulate debts they fear revealing to their father, a widower of limited means despite noble family connections to Viviandale.
The narrative turns when Bertram meets Eliza Lacey, an eighteen-year-old orphaned daughter of a half-pay captain living near Oxford. Described as exquisitely beautiful with classical features and an innocent, trustful disposition, Eliza represents virtue and propriety contrasted sharply against the brothers' worldly corruption. The serial develops complications involving aristocratic entanglement, social transgression, and moral consequence across chapters introducing wealthy nobles, scheming characters named Emanuel and Indora, and dark elements including references to a "Burker" and criminal intrigue.
