The Mysteries of the Court of London

Reynolds, George W. M. (George William MacArthur), 1814-1879 · 1860

The Mysteries of the Court of London, Volume VII

A serial mystery-romance set in fashionable Regency London. The opening chapter depicts a fashionable wedding at St. George's Church in Hanover Square on September 25, 1814: beautiful Venetia Trelawney marries Horace Sackville despite the apparent displeasure of the Earl of Curzon and cautious interest of Sir Douglas Huntingdon. The narrative then unfolds through chapters involving elaborate plotting around Parisian society, trials, imprisonment at Newgate, and assorted villainies. Chapter contents reference "fashionable depravity," a mysterious trial and execution, encounters in Paris, and various schemes among aristocratic characters named Ernestina, Lord and Lady Sackville, and others. The plot incorporates Gothic elements—mysterious disappearances, dark encounters, and moral transgressions among the upper classes—typical of the penny dreadful mode. Illustrated with five engraved plates depicting dramatic moments. The narrative voice critiques aristocratic morality while maintaining theatrical sensationalism throughout its 39 chapters.
