# CATALOG NOTE
The Mysteries of the Court of London, Vol. VII, Fourth Series (1855) by George W. M. Reynolds is a multi-plot serial narrative featuring interconnected stories of aristocratic and criminal intrigue. The primary narrative introduces two Oxford University students, brothers Hugh and Bertram Vivian, of noble but financially modest circumstances. Hugh pursues hunting, racing, and dissolute pleasures; Bertram applies himself to studies but is gradually led astray by his elder brother's influence and accumulated gambling debts. A turning point occurs when Bertram befriends a retired military captain named Lacey and his daughter, redirecting his life toward respectability and sentiment rather than vice. The volume develops numerous subplots involving characters including Zoe, Christina, Indora, Lettice, and Sagoonah across drawing rooms, criminal lodging houses, vaults, and London locations, mixing melodrama with mystery elements. Illustrated with fifty-two engravings by Cruikshank and Thwaites.
