The Mysteries of the Court of London

Reynolds, George W. M. (George William MacArthur), 1814-1879 · c. 1850

# The Mysteries of the Court of London, Vol. II

This installment of George W. M. Reynolds's serial novel continues the narrative with densely plotted melodrama spanning London's aristocratic and criminal underworlds. The volume follows the troubled Prince (heir-apparent to the British throne) through multiple interlocking storylines involving seduction, murder, blackmail, and social transgression. Key episodes include the Prince's nightmarish visions of his female victims and their dead infants; the fates of working-class characters like Rose Foster and the milliner; masquerade scenes at fashionable venues; the machinations of various noble and criminal conspirators; and proceedings in legal institutions including Newgate prison and magistrates' courts. Characters include Caroline Walters, various aristocratic ladies, the "Monster Man," and corrupt officials. The narrative oscillates between high society settings and lower-class environments, combining gothic supernatural elements with social-problem themes and violent crime. The illustrated edition contains fifty-two engravings by Henry Anelay and others.
