# Marion Marlowe's Noble Work; or, The Tragedy at the Hospital

This October 1900 serial by Grace Shirley follows three newly graduated physicians from the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Reginald Brookes accepts a position at the Penitentiary on Blackwell's Island to remain near Marion Marlowe, a seventeen-year-old nurse on probation at Charity Hospital, with whom he is in love. His classmate Dr. Fielding goes to Bellevue Hospital, while impoverished Dr. Fred Greenaway receives five thousand dollars from Brookes to establish a practice. Greenaway loves May Osgood, an actress, but faces unspecified obstacles. The narrative also introduces Dollie Marlowe, Marion's twin sister, working as a copyist for attorney Augustus Atherton. Bert Jackson, an orphan adopted by millionaire Captain Hobart, visits Dollie to announce his good fortune and confess his intention to propose marriage to Marion.
