A Lover's Quarrel; or, Marion Marlowe's Deceitful Friend
This serial by Grace Shirley concerns a theatrical company temporarily stranded in a New York hotel. Miss Ellis, engaged to Alberto Jackson (Bert), an educated young man from a wealthy railroad family, grows distressed upon discovering what appears to be a letter from Bert to Miss Fredericks, a newly acquainted hotel resident. The letter is found partially burned in Miss Fredericks's room following a convenient fire that destroys her wardrobe. Miss Ellis suspects infidelity and contemplates breaking their engagement. Marion Marlowe, an heiress and former actress patronized by society leader Mrs. Parker-Stetson, attempts to defend Bert's character while Miss Fredericks displays suspicious indifference to her losses and keen interest in Marion's social standing. Tensions escalate as Miss Ellis openly accuses Miss Fredericks of attempting to seduce her fiancé. The narrative breaks before the confrontation concludes, positioning Miss Fredericks as a potentially deceitful figure undermining the young lovers' relationship.
