This penny weekly presents "Monte Madrona; or, The Mystic Ten," a serialized adventure by Will B. Schwartz featuring miners and frontier violence. The woodcut shows figures in period dress around a mining camp—some seated, others standing—with crude dwellings and mountain scenery. Such publications, priced at mere pennies, reached working-class readers hungry for melodrama, crime, and thrilling escapes from urban labor. Street & Smith and competitors flooded newsagents with serialized tales of bandits, murders, and supernatural terrors. These sensational fictions, printed on cheap paper in dense columns with occasional illustrations, directly prefigured the comic book format: episodic narratives, visual storytelling, and mass production for popular appetite.
