The Safe Breakers' Gang

Clinch, Captain · 1892

"A Safe Breakers' Gang: The Three H.'s Great Skill" by Capt. Clinch is the featured serial in this issue. The story concerns Tad Silsby, a telegraph operator at rural Tin Bridge station, who encounters the mysterious Jules Jepworth—a man with commanding presence who coerces Tad into silence at gunpoint. Jepworth uses the telegraph to halt a freight train, forcing Tad to remove a large rock from the tracks; he boards the train with the intent to rob it. Despite Jepworth's threats, Tad sends a coded warning to authorities about a stowaway. After the train leaves, a dwarfish accomplice appears, interrogating Tad about Jepworth's identity. The narrative combines railway adventure with crime elements, tracking the schemes of organized safe-breakers against the determined resistance of an honest young operator.
