The OCR is severely corrupted, containing primarily Cyrillic characters and garbled text. However, the legible portions reveal this is No. 1879 (Annual Subscription $30) of a periodical published by John W. Lovell Company, New York, dated after May 14, 1889.
The readable content includes "The Curse Upon Mitre Square: A.D. 1530-1898" by John Francis Brewer. This historical fiction narrative begins in 1530 at Holy Trinity Church, Aldgate, and details the unease among forty monks of the Canons Regular, despite their wealth and influence. Prior Handcock, the weak-minded superior, suspects one monk of misconduct but abandons investigation. The narrative establishes a structure involving monastic intrigue and supernatural elements referenced in the title's curse, spanning medieval through late nineteenth-century London.
The issue also contains Singer Sewing Machine advertisements. Beyond these identifiable elements, the OCR corruption prevents accurate transcription of additional contents.
