Standish, Burt L., 1866-1945 · 1900
This issue of Tip Top Library (January 16, 1897) features "Frank Merriwell at Yale: or, Freshman Against Freshman" by the author of Frank Merriwell. The story follows Frank's arrival at Yale University as a freshman. Having passed his entrance examinations with Professor Scotch's tutoring, Frank settles into rooms on York Street with his roommate Harry Rattleton from Ohio, a headstrong athlete interested in baseball and football. After Frank defeats Harry in a boxing match, testing his previously unknown skill, complications arise: Jack Diamond, a peppery Southern freshman whose bull pup Frank kicked after it damaged his trousers, arrives with companions demanding an apology. When Frank demands the dog owner provide new trousers, Diamond challenges him to a duel with rapiers. Though Harry protests the weapon choice, Frank accepts. Sophomore Bruce Browning facilitates arrangements and secures a location for the encounter, suggesting foul play.
