Ellis opens with Alfred Haverland, a Pennsylvania emigrant, felling timber in western New York circa 1775 when a Yankee scout named Seth Jones arrives with warnings of Indian attacks and colonial hostility. Additional serials include "Daring Davy, The Young Bear Killer" by George (author of frontier tales); "Cinnamon Chip, The Girl Sport; or, The Golden Idol of Mt. Rosa" by Edward L. Wheeler (Deadwood Dick author), featuring action heroine Rosebud Rob; "Lance and Lasso" by Captain Frederick Whitt, depicting four schoolboys from the Tusculum Military Academy planning a South American adventure on the Argentine pampas; "The Yankee Rajahs; or, The Fate of the Black Shereef" by C. Dunning Clark; "Rapier Raphael; or, The Swordsmen of Zacatecas" by Major Henry B.
